Sadly, these rural parents with a son is very desperate, as they want their son to marry and carry on the family name, as it is a very old tradition in rural China. With dowry, it is like buying a woman for their son. Woman in rural area have a big advantage, if they choose to stay in the rural, which is rare as many want to venture out of the city to seek richer partners. For those rural women that do say in their home rural, their mother knows economics 101; supply and demand. As a result, the daugther's parents can demand high dowry and those men that are interested will find a way to pay or buy the woman.

@thetotaltruth948 Giving money to parents in law is indeed common in China. However, if it is too often and too much, I will not be happy. Depending on the city tier, if the in laws get 1000 rmb per person in pension, that is enough for food and pay bills. How much can the elderly eat? And many of them have savings.
