@aryangod2003 I do agree this seems to be mostly basic knowledge that even a child would know. However I have come to the understanding of acquired knowledge supersedes the old common sense approach. An excellent example is slippery when wet signs, or even 1st year apprentice on their first day. I feel it's better to acquire knowledge and not just believe you know it already. This in turn avoids accidents. For instance, I knew planes go higher to save costs (along with safety of concerning lower heights plus noise). I understood the air was 'lighter' or thinner, so obviously less resistance. But I didn't have all the tech associated with it, or the exact reason why it's 30,000 and not 25,000. Clearly the atmosphere and even the Earth's circumference is valid. I basically have never acquired this knowledge (no need to learn). And my common sense towards it may even be mistaken!

Both the treadmill and castor roller examples were merely representing how geared things can go faster. The EXPERIMENT however, was about the wind Vs speed of a designed object. The point is that the exampled non wind things, weren't there to provide authenticity to the wind machine, but ONLY to show that things can move faster through gearing, such as hands on a mechanical watch can do. They were merely interesting on their own.

We all bettering through science. Actually it can be clearly shown we are living in the best times ever from all previous times through education; technology; all the sciences; health; and enjoyment of life. Science is not about making things all lovely and fun. It merely our best method in determining reality. Even if a doctor confirms you have a terminal disease! This mental deficiency you speak of is not due to the scientific method. Actually its in spite of it. People tend to become comfortable in their ways or false beliefs. Science is not making them that way. Rather its helping to support their needs from now and into the future.

The vid was not simple. Simplicity itself is not a requirement of science. Sometimes you need to gain knowledge and understanding. Many people prefer a simple method of I believe in something else, which is always shown to be pathetic. Pretty sure I covered what the bad reasons are.

@ThaBeatConductor Yes this is the issue with the word best . Best for humans perspective? Best in spectrum of light and sound (which part of the spectrum?) Best in physical ability? Such as eyes moving sideways or even backwards. Agree the word best is subjective. When humans have 20/20 vision, that's already counted as the best the human eye can do. Plus its quite common with children and younger adults to have this best eyesight. To get better (subjectively) then clearly the physics of the eye itself would need to change. It reminds me when theists (commonly) refer to humans (or their man) evolving better that other animals. But evolution is not about bettering at all, if anything every single lifeform known is perfectly equally evolved at any single point in time to any other known lifeform. Thus evolution is not bettering at all. Best eyesight/hearing/smelling etc? Basically that's most of the population with special emphasis on the youth.

He didn't solve that by the 3 loops (or how many there were, pretty sure 3). Turing was solved because he made muddled up words coherent. IF it were only using this technique, then he would have found many possibilities of incoherent nonsense. He had more clues, as he actually had the paragraph of writing that he was trying to decipher. So when his looping patterns yielded no coherent words, he quickly moved on. The prisoners can't do that here.

It has been analogized as: Taking a thimble to the ocean and scooping up some water and saying: Nope, no whales in here. Except the thimble size is more like an atom, and the ocean is more like the Sun size. Have a look at some of those 'size of the universe' vids. They help. I like the one that begins from a person on Earth and expands out, but any will do. Plus many cosmologists actually state we may be in a multi-verse! Of infinite other universes. Its big REAL big.

Are photons held together by the speed of light too? Obviously the speed of light is not the best tool for measuring the quickest thing in the universe. The quickest thing would be spacetime.

@inconn262 You are asking where the testing was done. NOT at the difficult start, NOT at the slowing down in the end. But at the point ONLY where the vehicle gains speed ;) An excellent example is if a bike rider begins in 10th gear (really hard to get momentum here) and eventually gains enough speed that 10th gear has little energy of the rider to go fast. NOW replace the rider energy with (transparent) wind energy. The confusion is: 1. Wind is see through. So its difficult to wrap your mind around SEEING this experiment. 2. The TEST is not done at the beginning OR end ;) But rather somewhere nearish the middle to just past that area.

@inconn262 Oh and: 3. Once the bike rider stops pedalling (and going faster) eventually the bike will stop (and fall over LOL) ONCE the wind (energy) stops blowing, eventually the vehicle will stop. And then it would need to start in that really hard, massive energy, 10th gear again ;)

I don't know. But it may be analogized as science testing some water at some point and showing here's the Hydrogen and here's the Oxygen right at this point; when in reality its an ENTIRE stream of water ever rushing by. That's one idea I have. And the other is that its not space/time at all, its time/light. Because its only the point of which we can measure that becomes true and therefore gives in a volume of space, but in reality its merely observed rushing by. These philosophical questioning ideas, we are make leaps and bounds towards (although presently unknown therefore not confirmed). But I think the next revolution in reality will be focusing more on light and time and on the entire stream rushing by.

@endofunk2174 Your question was about science Vs politics. The reason why politics exist as decision makers even over science, is due to what the people want. An excellent example is in Robocop where the scientific robot saved the man from drowning and not the girl, because the man had a higher survival chance than the girl. Scientifically the robot was right. But in reality or humanitarian (or ideally politically motivated humanitarian actions for the people) it can be argued that we are better off saving the girl. This conflict has been dealt with many times. Science itself should not be the end deciding factor in determining the best actions of the people. Nor does science intend to do this. Rather, science is the best method to be on the path towards truth and should be used as one (powerful) factor in determining societies needs.

@silvercat3243 Agreed. Your concern is what I find by debating with theists. They feel science is at the end of knowing everything! I try to explain we are not at the end, possibly less than a percent into it in reality. Its just perceived that we are at the end ;)

@silvercat3243 Well emotions aren't a reliable method (this is where I originally felt you may have been some illogical unreasonable person). We worked out that emotions (you say feelings) are an unreliable method to be on the path towards truth. Similarly a drug may make you feel all happy and have a wonderful life in self deception. But MOST people prefer truth ;)

@silvercat3243 Well I debunked the past idea by explaining that we are better off medically; health; entertainment; I mean knowledge lets face it. And I didn't keep pushing that point to overly prove that, I merely expected you'd agree ;) As for logic, its not the best term actually (would take a 100 posts to discuss) better to say: Reason and evidence. There's also cultural logic! Very irritating area. Where its logical to do eskimo kisses (as an example) than to go sit by the water for a picnic (in a certain culture or location). Logic is just not the preferred word really. Maths is merely a method (or tool) to help us understand reality.

Negative. If you are aware of backward theistic beliefs in America, then YOU know that Americans act on their ignorance and superstitions. Its not bad of children believing in Santa out of ignorance. You could even say its expected children are ignorant. What's bad is when adults act on that ignorance. And THIS is the concern we have.

I found a fault with them. If using at night! Then bugs will constantly attract to that light, which seems to be EXACTLY on or around your eyes. Thus if using these navy (or army) night vision glasses in the countryside or really anywhere outside, then you'll get a trillion insects attacking your eyes!!!! That can't be good. Why can't we merely devise cat eyes or bat eyes? They can go all over the place without hitting a tree or a wall or anything, plus no light around their eyes. We clearly have a long way to go.

Negative. If -1 squared, is represented as a 90 degree change to real numbers, then how could you physically observe that? Obviously you can't. We can't whatch quantum atoms move 90 degrees from where they are at that time. Answer only the present state must exist in reality, and therefore nothing is moving. Merely a new page of present is placed on top. Thus everything must be able to change all the time with each page). I'm unsure why quantum is the only odd changing part. It's possible that everything (including history) is actually changing but we can't observe it. Can't wait to wake up rich tomorrow.

I have constructed a reasonable line of conversation, where a parent will instruct a child: No monsters exist, go back to bed. And then added that once the child is able to reason effectively (possibly 10 years later with a more developed frontal cortex of the brain, we can add: ...not that we know of ;) Whilst you spelt you're incorrectly, your line will help me to add onto this reply. I generally find adult theists to not be ready of strong reasoning or science (on this particular subject of claimed Gods, evil wicked witches, supernaturally evil people who were supposedly born as evil babies etc etc). Thus I begin on their level of understanding, with words such as I wrote above. Ready for nursery and instruction may be the words I require, when other, so called positive only atheists, question my somewhat patronizing and being told method. Thanks.

Science is the best known method of explaining everything we know to be true. A long time ago we worked out that reason and evidence is our guide. To question previous beliefs. Its through skeptism (a natural process of humans above 6, unless hindered by outside influences) that we can be on the path towards truth. Science is not a declaration of absolute truth, but rather the best known method to be on that path. Science is all about trying to prove things wrong, rather than proving something is right. Once we go through the scientific method removing any counter argument, then the hypothesis eventually becomes a scientific theory based on facts. As a science teacher you have the ability and requirement to help guide your students away from conspiracy theories; outdated beliefs; especially those based on emotions or personal testimony (the lowest, poorest method of determining if something is true or not). YOUR method is to get the 'kids' to begin questioning again, using the best known method of evidence and reason. Unless they prefer a non existent unreasonable belief!

Regarding the boat examples. They use a side to side motion (like a mathematical sign wave if that helps) to gain speed, and irrelevant to this experiment.

@jiminfested I'm thankful for all the info on this science experiment. It even took me a while to fully understand the test. Clearly even other professors of physics also questioned its validity. I see now that the test was not from start to end but only a certain point in the entire motion. A worthy vid.

So 100 Billion X 100 Billion X 6 = 6,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets. (minimum, but estimates actually say thousands of trillions of galaxies, so add on 9 more zeroes or 12 more) And we have only really checked 5,000 of them. This is like going to our ocean, with a thimble and scooping up some water, and saying: Nope, no whales in here! Although the known universe is much much much bigger than that comparison. More like an atom bucket to a Sun of ocean.

Science is based on the facts; reasoning; knowledge; evidence of the matter. It is NOT believing in the science guy! It irrespective if the science guy is supposedly fraudulent or not, as we follow the reason and evidence where it leads us and NOT any man or claimed man.

VERY simplified. Its merely gearing. How say a bike can pedal really slowly but go very fast. Now replace the person energy on the geared bike, with wind energy (and no person energy). The wind energy can go really slowly (but through gearing) makes the boat go very fast ;)

@kasper7203 Briefly: 1. The test was conducted not at the beginning or end of the wind. But when the wind had little effort to make the craft go faster 2. Similarly a person on a bike in top gear, is very difficult at the beginning. But (at the testing stage) only a mere light pedal (or wind gust) will propel you much faster, after you build up speed first. The wind merely needs to have little energy to propel the craft VERY fast (since the gear is like 10th speed on a bike) BUT the test is only done at that time. Not the build up, and not the end (when the wind energy stops). I wrote that clearer yesterday to someone. So I hope that shortened version now makes sense?

Chaos effect is not a religion. A religion is about beliefs, this is about science. They are polar opposites. Things are true or false irrespective of ones beliefs. And believers believe, irrespective of reasoning that goes against their beliefs (well at least the believers don't change their mind immediately upon being reasoned with. Anyway, this wasn't religous speak at all.

I think androids walking around will receive data from the cloud network. There's no need to have independent intelligence EXCEPT if the idea is to build a single conscious entity. Which would clearly be the preferred model. Imagine briefly going to the distant future, grabbing a single android and bringing it back (or the plans). Lets face it, its going to be living organs and analog and digital, with a cloud server safety backup and control feature. And then they'll take over, as expected.

It wasn't about the gear ratio. A simple mechanical watch could have shown how one hand spins faster than the other. It was showing how on one surface the speed of motion is different to the other surface (of the complete unit). It was meant to simplify how we can speed things up all on their own. Irrespective of gears; wind etc.

Is this similar to how waves in the ocean build up as they go further (or closer to shore) ? Why do waves in the ocean get bigger and bigger? Is that merely inertia similar to a boulder going downhill except the oceans are flat? This faster than wind vid (especially shown in the wheel pulley mechanism) shouldn't all transport be now based off that? Plus I realize you won't do it now, but I'd really like a very dumbed down layman's explanation of this vid. To me it still doesn't seem like it should be possible, even though I see it happening. Its going to keep concerning me until someone makes a basic vid of how it works.

Air from ocean plants? Whatever that was about, yes wonderful if science has helped to now know where our air comes from in what ratios! Science is NOT at fault for helping supporting bettering everything! What would be at fault is wilful ignorance to it. We are living in the best era ever, best technology; health; entertainment; knowledge you name it, due to science. If science informs you, you have a terminal illness that's not science's fault. Science is merely a pathway to the truth of reality. And clearly our best known method. Can you think of a better idea? Guessing or believing in nonsense maybe? They are NOT good methods!

For instance: The reason why a billion dollars has been spent of Mars exploration of previous life existing there (as the single reason for the entire Mars mission) is to help us understand life origins, and a step towards living on other planets or finding suitable exo 2nd Earth like planets. THIS better all of humanity. Do you feel they'll find previous life existing on Mars? The evidence and reasoning points to yes. Since science has informed us that the basic building blocks of life materials are found throughout the universe. Imagine if you believed that life can only come from Earth! That would be a bit backward thinking.

Many people don't like having their English corrected online, however since you queried if life exists in the universe, then I suspect you may be young, as such its good to correct this minor issue for future replies. Life Origins (abiogenesis) is likely not only on Earth, since we now know that all the elements to allow life (especially water) is found throughout the universe.

@RealTaIk Well said. Plus I only know one language, unless you count in computer languages LOL I'd say most people write a lot as one word, its very common although incorrect. How my parents said it to me was: If you see people writing a lot as one word, you'll know they aren't properly educated. However, you being tri (I normally would write bilingual) tri-lingual (possibly not a word, usually multi lingual) is extremely impressive. My main area online is helping theists (Christians etc) recover from religion. What made me interested in your original comment was the " many people don't believe we are the only living creatures in this universe " As I converse with many people who believe that Earth was created for man LOL. When we know Earth formed naturally about 4.5 billion years ago.

@RealTaIk Oh thanks for the reply. Now I'm decades in conversing with all sorts of Christians. From 6,000 Earth creationists, to the most liberal ones agreeing with evolution and supposedly loving everyone, and everything in between. For instance your personal interpretation. Put it this way, 99% of all Christians have their own interpretation, or follow their small denomination interpretation. Personal interpretation is the most common term of them all. Thankfully we now know there's only 1 truth, not multiple opposing truths. So the ones that believe in say Genesis of the Bible for each day being 1000 years or 1 million years, clearly they are different to the ones who say Genesis is not meant to be taken literally, (irrespective of what a day is defined as). To those Christians who have personal interpretation of a whole range of differences (men rode dinosaurs all the way to how we now understand evolution of all life species) Clearly they all can't be right, but they all can be wrong. It comes down to: How do we determine what's true or not? (thankfully we now have the best method to determine this). We determine the truth of reality, not through: Guesses; Wishes; Intuition; Emotions; Feelings; Stories (!) nor Personal Interpretations! Plus we fully know that faith is an unreliable method as well (worse than guesses, as guesses usually have some reason for them). We know faith (and the rest of those stated) is an unreliable method, even if you like it or not. Because of the vast amount of contradictory faiths out there. Christians say Jesus is Lord. Catholics say its not Jesus, its the entire trinity!! Muslims say: Jesus was not Lord, but merely a Prophet man. Jews say no Lord or God has even come yet. Hindus say a whole different story. Scientologists say it was a spaceship God Mormons (known as the most unreliable religous belief) say it was actually an American LOL And so on and so on for 10,000 all contradictory religous faiths. Clearly faith is an unreliable method. So what of this known best most reliable method then? Its: Evidence & Reason, the very thing none of these personal or doctrinal religous use. The irony that all these claimed Gods (with no evidence of course) must use evidence you exist and reason to determine your worthiness NOT faith! So even a God doesn't use faith. When asking thousands, 10's of thousands of God believers their reason to believe (or evidence!) we are supplied with non stop fallacies. So far not 1 Christian (or Muslim with their claimed Holy Qur'an etc etc etc) has ever supplied the slightest of worthy reason to believe. Like none. You'd think may 1 Christian somewhere? But no, not one. Oh we get a lot of personal 'stories' etc. But none of them prove even fairies could be true, let alone a God. As you require evidence of a thing, such as a God thing before believing it of course. And fear or love or even beliefs, personal or not, obviously aren't worthy to believe in magic dust let alone claimed Gods. On the contrary, every single Christian testimony; personal story even claimed prophesy! Can be fully explained by a simple natural explanation. All of them! For instance if I asked you why you did or do believe? I'm sure we could work out what's more likely, and its never magic or a supernatural cause, nor even the blue fairy did it.
