I remember Cicada 3301.
This is based on a post I made on BBS forums long before social media.
Back then 'Tech' people were limited in numbers. Possibly seen as an annoyance if anything.
We all had handles not usernames. Possibly coming from the sideband eras.
There was Rollergirl (pretty sure she died) and Admin (yes the 'Admin' days) and so many others.
It was the very beginning of policing a non restricted area, actually there were zero laws on the Internet.
The 'DarkWeb' hadn't even begun, it was more about free Servers and proxies, and then to constantly move. If you didn't keep up, then you dropped off forever, as it was all about privacy.
We worked out that:
1. Information should always be free. (capitalism destroyed this)
2. Privacy does matter. (privacy now completely gone, unless you are off, off the grid)
The idea was to keep freedom and privacy alive (of course now dead).
Actually these days everyone fights to be non private! And everyone is against free music, games, vids etc. - it's a crazy upside down world.
Cicada 3301 (frustratingly slow) tried to build a web of private people, off the Internet.
It was supposed to be Internet2, as everyone believed the common Internet would go down.
But who wants to read a book? Or physically wander around in search of data? This new Web idea lost traction. Plus to 'unplug' from the world is limiting yourself! Internet2 could not work.
Cicada 3301's challenge was to locate the 'special people' off grid, it became a lonely dead end.
If you're still out there Cicada 3301, let me know. But I suspect you are a mere empty shell of an individual left behind still clawing onto its tree.
