I'm guessing most people wouldn't regret paying off their mortgage early --- until they realized they were behind on saving up for retirement. Sure, there's risk in having mortgage debt, but there's also risk in not having enough money built up to have long and comfortable retirement. Gotta balance the two. Of course if you decide NOT to pay off your mortgage faster, you need to be putting any extra money you have into retirement savings/investments.

Seems that analytical part of people's brain doesn't kick into high gear until they start getting close to retirement and realize the huge sum of money you actually need to provide a decent income for 20-30 years of retirement. Unfortunately for most people retiring now, they started working just as pensions were going away and 401k plans were taking off. They didn't have the internet and they were suddenly fully responsible for their retirement 40 years down the road. Then they got hit by the "lost decade" of 2000 to 2010 when we got hit with two major crashes due to internet and housing bubbles. But with all the personal finance info and videos out there nowadays, you would think not having enough to retire would will become a less common issue as the years go on. Youtube has been a life saver: start early, save often, diversify, keep your expenses low.

No property tax means public schools shut down AKA neighborhood of uneducated people. The money has to come from somewhere.
