Not if the flanker fail to do their task. What if the flanking fail and Bakhmut also get capture? What would Ukraine going to do now? Assault Bakhmut to recapture it?

You need to think in term of military objectives instead of the land capture mean winning. Ukraine need a win so much in order for Nato to double or triple down. There no other best bet then the notion of giving the enemy false hope that they are winning. So the more Ukraine force they invest now is fewer force that Russia army need to deal with when the second attack plan come into action. War is nasty business and full of lies, the situation could be change by the hour if not minute.

@typhoon20724 that pretty much how the army work. Combine force to utilize the best assault on their objective in order to accomplish their mission.

@babel babel they could try to encircle city from flat land that give the defending force the whole advantage of giving coordinate of firing solution to Russian artillery unit to aim that these encircle Ukraine troops. I dont think it going to last long if they cant storm the city itself.

@GracefulCloudNine well, if the goal for Russia army is to liquidate all Ukraine military then there is no better then what they doing now. Russia army capture area and invite Ukraine army to attack.
