There was a few hundred years of trade, mainly through African ports, before annexation of whole territories. The average life expectancy of a European going inland, was measure in weeks. It was not until the late nineteenth century, with improving medical care. That Europeans started to move inland and set up local administration, and the demarcation of the present borders of countries, that we see today.

Britain on the other hand, traded with and colonized territories, which had never existed as political entities. Often, just a collection of different tribes.
