  14. Britain was the first country to industrialise. Which meant that many people worked regular hours, unaffected by the seasons. As they had when most people worked on the land. This gave them most of the weekend free, and playing sports and games were an natural result of this. Plus, the British ability to organise and codify things efficiently.
