By the mid-1980's, when this was made. It was probably all shot on videotape. The strobing effect on the monitors featured confirm this. However before that, film was sometimes used for location shots, with videotape used in the TV studio. Film was less bulky than early portable video camera recorders. In the 1970's, the BBC often shot dramas, using 16mm film for outdoor shots and video cameras for the studio shots. 16mm was convenient to use (as used on the Apollo space missions) and had a similar definition, to that of PAL video recordings. Such an example of this is, Pennies From Heaven (1977). If you watch the series, you can see the difference between the way the indoor and outdoor scenes look. By the start of the 1980's, it was practical to use videotape on location, as well as in the studio. As by that time professional, all in one shoulder-mounted camcorders were available and video, unlike film, did not require time-consuming processing before it could be edited.
