Why won't Joe do the things he promised to do that he can do? For instance he promised to decriminalize cannabis and release those arrested on cannabis charges. To this day we still have first time offenders serving life sentences on cannabis charges. It is in Joe's power to make this happen with the stroke of a pen and yet he refuses to do so.

@scruffopone3989 State laws do not override federal law. That is why the feds can arrest anyone in a state that has legalized marijuana. They choose not too, but they can if they wanted to.

@keirfarnum6811 Be hard to do when most Republicans also agree that it should be decriminalized. Decriminalizing marijuana is popular with the majority of Americans.

@domsolanke1619 First, legal scholars seem to mostly agree that the president can use the power of the executive branch to reschedule cannabis. This academic ambiguity aside, a better question to ask might be: Will Joe Biden use political capital to decide an issue, that he has not embraced?

@domsolanke1619 I think you are making that argument. Truth is if the fed reschedules marijuana that becomes the law of the land and any state laws would be based on it's classification. Can states decide they still want to jail people over marijuana after that? Sure they can if they want the population to turn on them at election time. In addition he can free the thousands currently doing time in Federal prison over marijuana charges. You know, do the thing he promised to do? Once again he has no good reason not to do this because it is a winner to the American people.

@domsolanke1619 Final comment. How would freeing all those federal prisoners not be effective for actual people. Unless I miss my guess they are actual people.

@domsolanke1619 well, I imagine Biden leading the charge would help. Good first step might be to threaten to do it by executive action if they fail to do so.
