When I was in Russia 20 years ago it was amazing to me the level of paranoia the older Russians felt. For example outside the flat I stayed in was a dark hallway with no lights. The building installed a light with motion sensor, but the older tenants kept tearing the light down because they were convinced it was a camera.

They also have forgotten the level of fear and paranoia that spread as a result of living in the USSR. Old timers not only feared the government they feared each other because all you had to do was piss someone off and they would turn you over to the KGB.

@vincentmwangi5968 Son I was there, I married a Russian. Active in Russian Community and know a lot of Russians. Paranoia was a staple of the USSR. Young Russians and the old timers are worlds apart.

@vincentmwangi5968 And Russians were not "kinder". Even when I was there Russians as a whole were very concerned about how they behaved in public out of fear of drawing attention. Very kind and open in the privacy of home and paranoid in public. A leftover from the USSR.

When the old timers tell you people were "kinder" at that time what that really means is that you dared not make any waves and had to fit in or you disappeared.
