Russia is probably not interested in the territories of western Ukraine, but Russia is interested in the denazification and demilitarization of the entire Ukraine. No one knows how it will end, and it is not excluded that everything will end with the total destruction of Ukraine, which has already been abandoned by about 20 million Ukrainians out of 45 million. A lot depends on the West, that is, whether the West wants to have an Israel model in Western Ukraine.

Last year, Zelensky pushed a law through the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) banning negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. That was the beginning of the end of Ukraine as we know it. After all the deceptions of Ukraine and its allies towards Russia since the collapse of the USSR through the agreements in Minsk and Istanbul, Russia simply has no one to negotiate with, even if it wanted to.

@upstairs1307 If Russia fails to denazify and demilitarize western Ukraine, then the west could establish a small state of Ukraine with a strong military that would serve to maintain instability in Eastern Europe just as Israel serves in the Middle East. Someone will still need to be ready for war with Russia in Europe, just as Israel is always ready for war with Iran in the Middle East. It is clear to me that the state of Israel would not exist without the enormous military aid of the US and the great political aid and economic cooperation with the EU and other Western countries. It is also clear to me that Ukraine has a strong and trained army, the rest of which can be preserved. Not even the Russians are omnipotent.
