  1. 'Lived in a privately owned complex a couple siblings inherited from their parents who inherited it from theirs. When the brother and sister began fighting over money, they decided to sell it. The first new owners (a large corporation based in San Francisco) did a sweep of every apartment in the whole complex. Within a few days everyone received a notice of a rent increase that they had to sign and return. They processed eviction's for everyone that didn't or couldn't comply. Many people were evicted. Those owners sold it to new owners right before the pandemic. Rent their has literally more than doubled since I've lived there. There are many vacancies there today and their asking price is laughable when you know about the integrity and quality of the units- they have paper thin walls and mold and the plumbing is, well, not optimal. I lived there in a one bedroom unit and knew everybody and interacted regularly with anybody and everybody. I moved people in/out, helped with repairs, carried groceries for the elderly and played with the children, some of which I watch grow up from babies. Now I live in a room I am renting from a nice family. If anything, I realize now that I lost that sense of community, and my role in it. I hope all these rich corporations enjoy their tax write offs in their comfy little air conditioned offices because I actually pay for my own toilet paper and gas.
