  1. In the 90's it was known you could buy an illegal handgun for $1 or a AK47 for $4. Instead of finding and confiscating this weapons, the Black ANC government of South Africa clamped down on regular citizens owning guns - and the violent crimes on families soared into the stratosphere - causing about half of whites to leave forever.

  3. Growing up around this time adults, even liberal ones, would often talk of a betrayal by America. The word was they had unofficially encouraged South Africa to 'go into Angola' and they would be close behind with real support, after all, we were up against the USSR and their allies. Then they changed their mind, citing 'apartheid', once it was impossible for us to back down. Obviously, the veracity of this is hard to confirm but such things were commonplace during the Cold War.
