Spit-balled alternatives to moving to space that come to mind. 1) Shrinking population down to 1 billion through education - all educated populations shrink. 2) Moving cities underground. 3) Depopulating 50% of the World's habitable land areas into one connected and fenced off nature reserve. 4) Get rid of cars and roads - transport everyone and everything in the air - modern zepellin airships and quad-copters. 5) Get really, really serious about circular economy. 6) Change mindset of people from self centered to encompassing of all life. 7) Punish those who trample on the natural World like we treat the worst criminals. All the above is cheaper than a colony on Mars or in Orbit - by about a factor of 1000.
