  1. The finance industry is a big place. Plenty of narcissistic monsters crawling the corridors but also plenty of decent people. Try to speak to other people who have worked for the same department or group of people.

  2. Thief! You stole my comment! I worked in auditing/accounting for a long time, and it was exactly the same. I still wake up sweating sometimes remembering stupid small jobs from 15 years ago were I was given bs estimates to complete the work. To say nothing of the number of times I was flat out told to compromise the quality.

  3. If your manager is able to buffer then the place is not nearly as toxic as you think. Properly toxic places don't let managers buffer - everyone has to work until burnout kicks in.

  5. The problem has to do with the business trying to do low value things with an expensive tool, programmers. If you work working on something that will make or break the business and will make them $100m they will treat you like gold. Instead, some low level nobody in accounting wants a button so she does can do nothing all afternoon. Software development should focus only on high value business projects. Spreadsheets work fine for everything else.
