Your viewpoint is greatly influenced by where you live. I live in a country with enormous liberty, mostly because of failed implementation of law and order, and as such enough individuals use the available 'liberty from the state' to murder, steal, rape and pillage that the country is sliding towards failure and ordinary people mostly live in perpetual fear. Liberty is a fine thing, but it does not belong in the realm of the state, but rather in the realm of culture. The state's proper job is actually equality - to treat every citizen equally and fairly. It is overstepping this role that the state becomes oppressive - resulting in the inevitable laments for more liberty.
