Employers are figuring out in this market that they have to do something that they've never actually done before in the previous 12 years: act decently and have a place that you would actually want to come to. People can have all the screaming fits that they like against this fact, but this is what's happening. My employer brought the pay up $2 and acted like it was the most over-generous thing that they'd ever done in their lives, and we the employees are like "okay so that's getting towards halfway decent, keep going". And the employers still can't figure out that they can't get new recruits because they still need to pay even better. But it's coming. The retention rate in even the maintenance section of my shop is 1 in 10. Production section retention rate is 1 in 5. Having a "churn" means that your accident and equipment damage incident rates are going to go up. Which in the long run is going to be EXTREMELY expensive. A lot more expensive than just doing what you should and paying your employees decently. But let the employers learn the hard way. Let them be stuck on stupid for a while. And what you're having happen in the country at large is what's happening at employers like mine on the small scale.
