  2. The question posed in the title cannot be answered except by finding alien life in our own galaxy. Practically everyrhing in the universe is vastly distant in both space and time. We can detect novas and such in nearby galaxies, but there is no possibility of detecting communication signals at such distances, or detecting planets as we are starting to do in our galaxy. We can reasonably conclude that there are countless planets in every galaxy, but that does not answer the question. Therefore, the practical question is: Are we really alone in the galaxy?
