NATO will not be admitting Ukraine, ever (I hope).

Putin came to power after Reagan was gone.

@ianhomerpura8937 — I expect everyone in any position of power in Ukraine is corrupt.

@theotherohlourdespadua1131 — No, it is not valid to generalize from single cases.

I (a US citizen) don’t see any ethical question. It is just a pragmatic matter. Some people (including Sarotte) argue that sovereign nations have a right to choose their alliances. But an alliance is a treaty and a treaty requires mutual agreement. In my opinion, Ukraine should never be admitted to NATO whatever Ukranians want, and I thought that years ago.

@ashroskell — There is more to Crimea than oil. The Russian naval base is the biggest factor, but also the facts that Crimea is historically Russian (since Catherine II) and that Crimeans do not consider themselves Ukranian.

M. E. Sarotte has discussed this at length in public talks and she shows that, while a promise against expansion seems to have been made by James Baker, the treaty signed for the reunification of Germany does not contain any such language. I agree with her that only signed treaties matter. On the other hand, NATO clearly has no business in Georgia or Ukraine. I think admitting Poland was a mistake, since they seem bent on supporting Ukraine. It would have been best if there had been no expansion at all.

The expansion of NATO is documented and easily found online.

Russia was promised that NATO would not expand eastward, so that argument cuts both ways.

Joining an alliance is not a right. NATO must agree to admit a new member nation, and may refuse.

Sure, but that doesn’t explain why NATO would even consider admitting Ukraine and Georgia. Ukraine is not important to the security of the USA or NATO generally. In fact, as we have seen, Ukraine is a threat to the security of NATO. Zelensky wants war with Russia and he wants NATO to fight it.
