@bgop346 — SGI bought Cray before Sun bought Cray, so it connects to this story.

I’m old enough to remember Wang. They invented word processing, but their model was an integrated hardware/software solution. General purpose desktop computers and seperate word processing applications left them behind. An Wang also invented the core memory, or, more specifically, the pulse transfer controlling device that was key to making core memory work. This was an important advance in computing technology.

I worked for several years on Cray’s machines (Control Data and Cray Research). They had simple instruction sets, but I would not call then RISC machines. A better early example would be the Data General Nova. But the credit for RISC design philosophy is generally given to John Cocke of IBM in 1974. The term RISC was coined later by others, however.

Vi is the worst editor I ever used. The only programmer’s editor I ever liked was Brief. Brief is best.

I wouldn’t call DEC a “flash in the pan.” They had a good, long run in the minicomputer era.

Yes, but there were variants with a 32-bit data bus. Many microprocessors were produced with variants for different data bus widths.
