  1. These recorders are the best technology for the purpose. There are thousands of flights per day, and one aircraft produces a large volume of data. Nearly all of the data are just thrown away because crashes are so rare. Onboard recorders are by far the most practical and reliable way to preserve the data when needed. It is extremely rare that data cannot be recovered from a recorder.
