  2. They spent very little time on the north shore, camping in a place Clark described as a "dismal nitch." Then they crossed the river, entered the bay (now Young's Bay) and went a short way up what is now the Lewis and Clark River to build Fort Clatsop, where they spent the winter. Fort Clatsop is now a National Historical Park and there is an interpretive center (mini-museum). Anyone interested enough in history to drive there should also stop at the memorial to Conde McCullough, famed builder of many of Oregon's bridges, located at the west end of the bridge over the Lewis and Clark River. The two drawbridges are among his earliest works.
