  2. james lawracy — Gary Gallagher takes the view that, as a practical matter, they were a nation, even though the United States did not recognize them as such, and other nations did not recognize them. They acted like a nation, but had a short existence. I am inclined to think they never deserved to be thought of as a nation, but on the other hand, I think quibbling over terminology is pointless.

  3. James Pitts — About 700,000 total, by current estimates. They didn’t kill enough rebels, in my opinion. Every death, south and north, falls on the shoulders of Jefferson Davis and his fellow secessionists. War was the only proper answer to secession, and so it came.

  6. Davis was a graduate of the US Military Acadamy. He should have been taken back to West Point in chains, read the oath he took upon being commissioned, then hung. These traitors got off far too easily.
