Hamburger did not create this problem. He was hired to fix it, and it seems he has.

This is a British channel.

In the USA, we use whatever units suit the situation. We are bimetral. Metric and US units are equivalent. It doesn’t matter which a presenter uses in his video. This one is presented by a publisher with an international audience, so naturally uses Metric values.

Hamburger did not design this building. He is the engineer who is fixing it.

It would not be easy and it would be hugely expensive.

Don’t leave out the smash and grab thieves.

The fix using 18 new piles on the west has done what it was supposed to do. It has arrested the progress of tilting toward the west.
1
As of late June 2023, the 18 additional piles have been placed in bedrock, have been fully loaded at one million lbs each, and the progress of the leaning to the west has been arrested.

His reputation notwithstanding, his solution has worked, so far.

I was in the Bay Area for that. The structures which suffered major damage had specific weaknesses that made them vulnerable. Modern high-rise buildings rode it out fairly well. A magnitude 7 earthquake is significant, but does not cause general disaster, only localized damage.

The city was partly responsible for the problem.

In a condominium, the unit owners generally do own the land as tenants-in-common.

The conversion is grade school arithmetic. You can manage it.

That layer was excavated on the site of the Millennium Tower. I expect that would be done routinely.
1
The 18 piles have arrested the sinking on the west side, so further settlement on the east side will tend to straighten the building.

Hamburger’s plan has arrested the progress of the leaning to the west. That is what he was hired to do. At this point, he is looking good. Remember, he did not create this problem.

“Always”? Where do you get that? This happens to be a site based in the UK. If you don’t like it, find another.

@4vinylsound — As I said, listen to something else if this doesn’t suit you.
1
For a building that height, the lean is only a quarter of one degree.
1
@icarusamerica3436 It’s still a standard, but sometimes things go wrong. In this case, the building was put up plumb, level, and square, but then started to lean because of an inadequate foundation. The builders putting up the superstructure can’t be blamed for this. It’s on the foundation engineers, mainly.

Bauernkind 85 — These projects won’t affect General Motors.

That’s a lame reason to watch or not watch a video. This site has an international audience, so it is expected that they would favor Metric units. They are based in Britain, not North America. Units are arbitrary and conversion of units is trivial. I am interested in the substance of a presentation, not insignificant details of notation.

Otis manufactures in S. Carolina as well as China. They sell products around the world and have installed a few thousand elevators in China, so it is not surprising that they would have a plant in China.

His solution worked.

This site has an international audience and is based in Britain. Their content is better than most of the other sites which have discussed this building.
1
The company that did the geotechnical work has been acquired by another company.
