I can’t help comparing this to GM and its infamous ignition switch problem. GM knew they had a problem, but denied it, while secretly introducing a redesigned ignition switch under the same part number. Boeing knew they had a problem even before the Lion Ait crash, but certainly after, and they were quietly revising the software while the CEO went around insisting the aircraft was safe.
What did GM do to restore confidence? The replaced the CEO with someone who was untainted by the scandal — someone from the engineering side rather than the business side. She fired 15 high-level emloyees (on top of those who retired) and the corporation counsel, accepted responsibility, then went about reworking the corporate culture.
Boeing needs to fire its CEO and the corporation counsel who likely is telling the CEO to admit to nothing, and find a new CEO who will restore the original Boeing corporate culture. No one from McDonnel Douglas may be considered. While they are at it, move the e ecutive offices back to Seattle. Then clean house of every high-level employee who tried to cover this defect up.
Then, restore the traditional Boeing design philosophy that pilot inputs have priority over computers. Create a safety officer position, an engineer who reviews designs for fail safety.
