Here’s my take on slow response: Texas has 254 counties! Even for a large state like Texas, that’s a huge number. San Jacinto is a small county, with fewer than 30,000 population. Such a small county necessarily has a small Sheriff’s department, so does not have the resources to provide the quick response needed for this case. By the time the Sheriff sized up the situation and brought in help from other counties and state and federal agencies, the suspect had a big head start trying to get away. All things considered, I think they did a remarkable job tracking him down. Of course a tip was key, but that is often the case with fugitives.

@Acolis — Inefficiency. Texas does not have economies of scale in county services because of the small counties.

@wilmerconstanzo6578 — A larger county would be able to take better care of the roads. San Jacinto County is a backwater. Compare Texas to California, which has only 58 counties. Texas is less than twice as large. It should have fewer than 100 counties.
