  1. cat 11 — It was President Nixon’s decision to end the war while pretending to keep the pressure on until we got an acceptable deal. The bombing was just keeping up appearances for a time. In the end, we got nothing except peace. That was the only thing worth having, though.

  2. The containment strategy originated from George Kennan, but Kennan himself said that his idea did not require going to war in Vietnam. The correct strategy would have been to help Vietnam to implement the Geneva Accords, but otherwise to get out. Even General Macarthur said the place to draw the line was between SE Asia and the Philippines.
