Eddie Starr — That’s a laugh.

Qantas still flies the A330 after the flight 72 incident. Presumably, Airbus fixed the defect, one similar to the 737 MAX defect. Do any of the Boeing bashers here have a problem with that?

RM — Now there’s a fanboy, giving Airbus a pass for a defect in the automation which caused the flight controls to go berserk. No one was killed, but only because the captain was highly skilled and because he had a lot of altitude to work with. Several people were seriously injured. I don’t give anyone a pass. I was openly critical of Boeing after the preliminary report of the Lion Air crash was released, and even more so when Mr. Muilenburg and Mr. Elwell were in denial mode. And I have long been critical of Airbus for their overuse of automation, even overriding the pilot’s inputs. Ironically, the MCAS defect seems to have taken a cue from Airbus in working against the pilot’s intentions. Boeing have fixed the MCAS and limited its ability to move the flight control surfaces. With the revised MCAS, the MAX will be as safe as the NG series, which is as safe as any other airliners, so it should be flying again soon. Boeing will be well-advised to get back to their long-established principle that the pilot has ultimate control of the aircraft. I expect this fiasco will be remembered for a long time within Boeing and will influence aircraft design for the better.
