  1. It isn’t only a matter of using (or not) a Christian reference. Using BCE/CE also acknowledges the fact that the year of the birth of Jesus is not actually known, and there is disagreement on which estimate is best. Scholars have used BCE/CE for 300 years because it is neutral in both regards.
