  1. Anybody as old as I am (in my 70s) witnessed it. The secessionists that led to the Civil War were the Southern Democrats. When blacks got the vote, they were all Republican (as Lincoln was). By the 1960s, Southern Democrats were changing their party registration to Republican, and blacks were Democrats. President (Lyndon) Johnson’s domestic policies were liberal and Nixon was appealing to southern conservatives with his “southern strategy.”

  2. It’s a hypothetical and unprovable, but the sort of thing that academics like to chew on. I’m a realist and think the question is pointless. Abolition was just not high on the agenda of the founding fathers. Only a few were ardent abolitionists.
