Multnomah County built a multimillion dollar jail several years ago but couldn't figure out what to do with it, so they sold it for pennies on the dollar.

  37. How? Portland elected Mayor Wheeler and Oregon elected Governor Brown and AG Rosenblum. Multnomah County built a new jail and couldn’t figure out what to do with it. It’s basic. Portland needs to arrest miscreants and lock them up, and the State needs to send in the National Guard when necessary to back up the police.

  47. There are no emergency brakes on a ship. That's just the way it is. Electric drive would be faster, but still not fast enough to stop the forward momentum of a ship in time. Ships should operated at bare steerageway in ports for that reason, in my opinion, at least until clear of bridge supports.

  48. No, Portland is not a safe place. There have been riots for months, but the governor has not activated the National Guard once to maintain civil order. Portland is a basket case and will continue to be until there are a competent mayor and a competent governor.
