  12. I've noticed that in Baker City they have a street marked "Broadway Street," which is redundant, as "Broadway" is a compound of "Broad Way." Being from an Oregon town which has a "Broadway," this is one of my pet peeves about sloppy nomenclature. I suppose "Baker City" has some point, to distinguish it from Baker County (as Oregon City must be distinguished from Oregon).

  16. The Astoria-Megler bridge pylons are protected by fenders. Ships routinely pass under it without tug escorts. They had better provide adequate protection. Fenders will work if they are large enough. When a ship struck the San Francisco Bay Bridge several years ago, the only damage was to the fender and the ship.

  20. No, it is not a cover-up. The NTSB normal procedure is to release only facts which are known. They have a few press conferences for important events such as this one, then they may have a preliminary report summarizing the facts of the incident in a month or two. The complete report will take a year or more, probably two years in this case. The NTSB are not a news agency. The delay is not important to their purpose, unless they discover something which requires immediate action. In that case, they have a procedure alerting agencies who need to act on it. The bridge is dominating the news because people want to know when it will be replaced.

  47. That part of the highway just south of Seaside has been flooding forever. All they have to do is raise the roadway at least a foot. I suppose they haven’t done it because adjacent property owners would complain about having to pay to raise their access points. Several years ago they expanded the flood zone west of the highway thinking that would fix it, but obviously it wasn’t enough. The level of the Necanicum River through downtown Seaside depends on the tides, mainly. Heavy rain during spring high tides is when you can expect flooding.
