  1. “Retaking”? Argentina never held them. They were British before Argentina was a nation. Argentine tried to claim them early in its history, with a small garrison, but they were evicted easily. There have never been Argentine settlers.

  2. The cost of maintaining defenses is far less than the cost of evicting a large invasion force that becomes established due to lack of defenses. Besides, the United Kingdon must always have training facilities for its armed forces, which have world-wide commitments. The Falkland Islands seem ideal, with lots of available land.
