  1. Me. — Sovereignty is an inherently good thing which the British today seem not to appreciate. When the American Revolution began, the support for it was not based on a narrow calculation of self-interest. The separatists just wanted the American colonies to be free to run their own affairs, and to that end they pledged their “lives, fortunes and our sacred honor.” People today may not know that there was opposition to separation as well. When it was settled in favor of independence, the royalists got used to the new status or they moved to Canada. Independence was rough going at first — we had to fight a second war a generation later to secure our sovereignty — but in the long run it worked out for the better. In the modern world the adjustment would be easier. You already have institutions and experience in being a sovereign country. The main challenge for the UK is within — the fragmentation into so many parties, especially regional parties, and (as we are all witnessing today) the dysfunction of your form of government which lacks a strong leader and which has almost no checks and balances. The question is, do the people of Great Britain want to be free and independent or not?
