Andrew Hey — Harrison didn’t have time to do anything wrong.
27
Chanta Nupa — The wave will likely will be about 30 feet, but in any case the 44 feet given here is on top of the elevation of the land, which might be ten feet or more. I’m sure they have calculated what was needed.

Oberlin deserved to get hammered for what they did. The officials that did this should all be fired by the board.
14
I have been to many public memorials. The Lincoln Memorial is the most moving, without question.
14
I saw him in the store just a few months ago. It’s funny that he’s wearing an employee id badge.
9
I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Not merely physically, but beautiful in every way.
7
This is fascinating to me, because my maternal grandmother was from Benton County, Arkansas. She left with her father and siblings as a child, moving west, first to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), then the west coast, more than a hundred years ago. I’ve never been to Arkansas, but have thought of visiting the graves of my ancestors there (the Sawreys). I had no idea there was anything else to see in Benton County. And Thorncrown Chapel is in the next county.
7
She doesn’t insist. You may call her what you please. If she uses her degree on her business card, that’s her business.
7
@jaobidan2358 — I always called my professors “Dr.” when they had a PhD. That was normal protocol.
6
I had a professor who said Hemingway’s titles were better than his books. Great titles.
5
She’s famous for being a witty talker who is not like anybody else. She started to acquire her fame as a writer, then discovered she could make a living just talking, which is much easier.
5
Joey Benoit — I lived on the Oregon coast during that tsunami (from the Alaska earthquake). In my home town, a bridge and a few houses near the fiver were destroyed.

All this carping in the comments about Al Gore’s presence is ridiculous. He said nothing controversial in this video. Apollo 8’s legacy is the discovery of Spaceship Earth and all Gore does here is to (correctly) explain the significance of Anders’ “Earthrise” photo. In my group in that day, Richard Nixon was the politician we loved to hate. But it does not bother me in the least to see and hear Nixon welcoming the Apollo 11 astronauts back to Earth. I’ve known some people who can never set politics aside for a moment, no matter the occasion or how much time has passed. They are unhappy people. That’s no way to live.
4
morskojvolk — Nah, just skip over the nutters.
4
Police can’t shoot an assailant when he is in close quarters with his victim. They apprehended him, so that’s that.
3
K M — It isn’t just the thickness of concrete that matters, it’s how the entire structure is designed, especially the foundations. A news story like this doesn’t go into all the details.
3
The District of Columbia is just one city, Washington. It is not a proper state. It has no natural resources. The people should have a proper member of the House of Representatives, but that’s all. They already have a vote for President. A better solution would be to merge most of the District with Maryland, but I doubt Maryland would want it.
3
Some people (Trumplicans especially) are just sore losers and nasty. When they lose, they have to compensate by trashing the winner, even for insignificant things. It’s petty.
3
Buzz Lightyear — That’s stupid. Wouldn’t any lawyer tell them to shut up?
3
Jo Lind — You are not taking into account the elevation of the land. I am sure they have.
3
TheSSUltimateGoku — This isn’t about R. Kennedy and what would have happened had he not been killed is entirely speculative. Humphrey won the nomnation without running in any primaries, because they were not so important in 1968. Kennedy’s delegates went to McGovern, and MsGovern and McCarthy together did not have enough delegates to prevent a first-ballot nomination of Humphrey.
3
FascistAnarchist999 — Kennedy would not have been nominated. It was all of the Vietnam War that turned people away from the Democrats, not one incident. My Lai was not Democratic Policy, it revulsed Democrats and Republicans alike. The irony is, we got four more years of war under Nixon, although he did reduce the troop commitment throughout those years. An important factor was that many McCarthy and Kennedy supporters abstained from voting. A similar thing happened in 2016 when Sanders supporters opted out.
3
They do, in fact, use these crossings.
3
gravityking — Rice is even better than Obama. She would be the smartest Vice President ever, and a strong candidate for President in 2024.
3
She denies the danger of second-hand smoke, but she’s wrong on that. Witty about everything else, though.
3
DON MCKINNEY — The Earth is not cropped. It’s a gibbous Earth just like we see a gibbous Moon. Part of the image of Earth is in shadow, so it is dark because the exposure is set for the sunlit parts. “Earthrise” is a straight photograph of the entire Earth.
3
Great Britain committed acts of war, then the United States declared war. I guess you can interpret that either way. But we did not declare war on Canada, which at that time was just a territory of Great Britain.
2
Cerebro Brother — Good grief, she knew that! It was a staged “wardrobe malfunction.” Didn’t you hear the quotation marks she put around the term? Some people can be so obtuse!
2
tim rundall — The camera is attached to the lander. This part of the mission is not rocket science.
2
The “glass ceiling” is an inapt metaphor when applied to politics. The meaning it has in the corporate world doesn’t apply in politics. There has not been a barrier to women attaining high political office for a very long time.
2
Easy. Susan Rice. Please Mr. Biden, do not pick someone from the looney left. By the way, I mean Warren. Rice has strong foreign policy credentials. The theme of Biden’s campaign is restoring competent government, and foreign policy is where that is most needed.
2
Marco Polo — Not all. He was not a hero. A hero puts himself at risk to help someone else. This guy helped no one. In fact, he put many others at risk and disrupted the lives of countless more.
2
I think Buchanan might lose his place of distinction.
2
Completely missing here is the fact that, some time earlier, U. S, forces burned the town of York (later Toronto). This action by the British was payback.
2
Buzz Lightyear — What does that have to do with this story?
2
Leslie Keith — That property has been the location of the high school for a century, long before we knew anything about tsunamis. But they are building a new school in the hills to the east. I don’t think that’s the best solution. There is only one chance in six that school will be in session when the tsunami hits. The entire town will be flattened, not just the schools. Seaside will be impossible to evacuate in time.
2
I went to New Mexico years ago and my impression is that “New Mexican” is a cuisine, not merely a style. Of course food in our southwest is related to Mexican food, but saying that it is all “Mexican” food is like saying food from different provinces of China is all “Chinese” food. Such broad characterization ignores the regional variation that makes food so interesting.
2
She was called that in the 1970s. These reporters were merely referencing that.
2
MrHalvnir — It was for the development of rocketry for the defense of the nation. There is not much difference between launching people into space and launching bombs at an enemy nation.
2
Don’t forget Whole Earth Catalog, which used “Earthrise” on its cover.
2
This administration respects science. Astrology is bunk.
2
I see her as American.
2
Fran has never tried to follow the trends.
2
Birdie Jeffers — That works, but not the other way around.
2
Republicans were saying similar things in 2012 when President Obama was running for his 2nd term, but he won reelection handily.
2
He likely lived with whoever would allow him to.
2
Buchanan led the nation when the south seceded, but Jackson prevented secession much earlier. He said if any South Carolinian spilled the blood of a soldier of the United States, he would personally go to South Carolina to see that South Carolinians were hung. They believed him.
2
Rex Icarus — Harris got where she is today by being smart, competent, and tough. She will do the job well.
2
I would expect the largest museums to be in large cities. I would not be disappointed to find a smaller museum in an off-the-beaten-path location.
2
I’m impressed that both Bidens are so vigorous at an age when most people are retired.
