  1. I think it is sappy. I don’t see why some people think it was excellent, although some aspects of it are. It is basically anti-sexism propaganda, but for the sake of their heroine they misrepresented the achievements of an actual woman who advanced the status of women in chess, Nona Gaprindashvili, to the extent that she sued the producers. Justifiably, I think. It was settled out of court, so I expect it had some merit. The character reminds me of the heroine in Auel’s The Clan of the Cave Bear, who was exaggerated to the point of being credited not merely with contributing to the progress of women, but that of homo sapiens generally.

  2. Apparently it was settled out of court. It is interesting that the book on which this series was based did not misrepresent Gaprindashvili’s achievements. They changed it for this production for the sake of strengthening their heroine. They probably thought the original was dead.
