I’m from Oregon. I’ve never liked the Portland Building or Postmodernism generally. The essence of architecture is the space within and around the structure. It seems to me this building simply strives to draw attention to itself visually, by its use of patterns and color, rather than by its effective use of space. This is reinforced by hearing that changes to its appearance have compromised its status as a historic building. In this video I have heard nothing about how well the building works for its intended function. Do the people who work there like it? Do citizens having business there like it? I have only been in the lobby. I can think of many public buildings I have been in which were more welcoming, even inspirational. I do think it was worth renovation, however. It was built, and if it is sound structurally, and usable even if not inspirational, then it ought to be maintained.

The Pentagon Papers.

It isn’t just about the actual age. “Dated” means that fashions have changed. Classics eschew fashion and strive for a timeless look. The Portland Building is fixed in the Postmodern Era because of its square windows.

They had to be thick at the bottom because it is pushing the limits of height for stone structure buildings.

It would have cost a great deal to demolish and replace it, so you should be looking at the diffetential cost.

Since it is being rehabilitated, probably it will not be.

I like raw concrete. I live in a loft with a lot of raw concrete. Architecture is not about style, anyway. It's about the arrangement of space.

Roofs from any period and in any style can leak. Modern buildings don’t leak any more than older buildings, and probably less, but when a building by a famous architect springs a leak it gets in the newspapers.

Until an architect has a filthy rich client who wants to use an expensive material only because it’s cool, without any necessity.

Crown Hall is a good example of open plan, in a more practical context than Farnsworth House.

No, that is not what modernism means. There are many beautiful modern buildings. Our state capitol in Salem by Pietro Belluschi is an example.

I remember reading about them when they were built, and seeing them several years later. I never wanted to live in them. I would like an apartment in the John Hancock tower.

People who want to live in a neighborhood with a uniform style should live in a planned development. That will come with an association which will meddle in your affairs in all sorts of ways and charge you a fee for doing so. Alternatively, buy enough land to keep the neighbors at a distance. I don’t want anyone telling me what a house should like like. I may not like the look of what others may build, but it is their choice. Live and let live.

@Jostan748 — Those are unrelated. The Portland Building was in poor condition. It had to be either repaired or replaced, both expensive.

The building is used for city business.

Union Station was and is worth saving.

How can you respect the original work? Just set your circles aside for a time and get back in tune with the straight line.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Modernists don’t every building to look the same. Build your house to suit yourself.

If the building were not rehabilitated, the money would be spent tearing it down and building a new one.
