  1. Respect for one’s adversaries has some merit, but where fascists are concerned, give no quarter. President Trump is a fascist. I am conservative in the use of such words, and did not call him that a couple of years ago. But as we got into the election year, it has become clear. What are the hallmarks of a fascist? Demagoguery, lies and intimidation. Attacks on democratic institutions. Threats against opponents. It became clear that Trump was not an ordinary demagogue when he suggested that the election should be delayed. That ploy failing, he tried to intervene in the electoral process, which is run by the states, by trying to delegitimize mail-in ballots, then by trying to prevent counting of ballots after election day, a normal process. Then, to seal the charge, he said publicly that Biden should be arrested. (For what, exactly, he did not say.) Now, he tries to challenge the election result with specious claims. It is clear that Trump is a fascist. To our credit, the nation is not yet fascist. Before I would treat any Trump supporter with respect, I would have to be convinced that he or she rejects fascism explicitly, as represented by Donald Trump. There is no compromising with fascists.
