  1. The Republican Party is a shadow of its former self. Anyone my age remembers some of the great Republican senators of half a century ago: Howard Baker, Lowell Weicker, Goldwater, Margaret Chase Smith, Mark Hatfield, etc. That was a time when senators of both parties thought it was their job to act as a check on the executive branch.
