Some of those boarding lanes are poorly designed. I have driven onto Washington State Ferries many times without incident, but once several years ago I was going to take a ferry which was unfamiluar to me. The boarding lane came up and was empty, but was marked with signs indicating driving in it was not allowed (I don't remember exactly how it was worded). I stayed out of it until I suddenly noticed it was full of cars. There was no waby to go back to try again, so I cut over when a light changed. Somebody reported me and by the rime I got to the booth the attendant had my number, Very efficient reporting system. I explained the situation and nothing came of it. Ii'm not advocating cutting in, just better design and signage of the boarding lanes.
