  1. He mentions Greenough in passing. That would be Horatio Greenough, an immensely important influence on American art and architecture. It was Greenough who first expressed the maxim that form follows function, not Louis Sullivan as most think. It was Greenough who criticized early plans for a colonnade around the base of the Washington Monument, which would only have detracted from the power of a simple obelisk.
