We know a simplified version of this children’s rhyme. Your guest seems to have an authentic version. A “crib” is where a farmer stores certain crops. A corn crib is more familiar, but a pumpkin crib would be the same thing. Our English version of the rhyme has Peter putting his wife in a pumpkin shell. It must have been quite a large pumpkin.

My ancestors emigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany in the 1700s. I never knew any who spoke German, but my mother still had the German surname before she married. My understanding is that the Palatine exodus was more about economic conditions in that part of Germany than about religion. The move to Pennsylvania was sponsered by Great Britain as a means of settling Pennsylvania. They were called “Dutch” in America because they came from Deutschland (as you say) and sailed to America from Rotterdam. The Rudrauffs were Lutherans and some were ministers. They conducted church services in German for at least a hundred years after arriving.
