  1. Construction nearby should not have any significant effect on a sound building. I live in a reinforced concrete building. We had pile driving going on right next to our building when a new building was being constructed. We put strain guages on the cracks in the wall adjacent to the lot where the pile driving was being done. There was no movement at all in those cracks. This building probably had a poor foundation.

  2. No. Nothing that is done in this process should cause a building to collapse. There must have been some problem which was not noticed earlier.
