  1. I’m glad NIST are on the job. They will get to the bottom of this. Beware of channels with names chosen to sound authoritative, pretending to have expertise and answers, without even visiting the site. Some of these were working the FIU pedestriam bridge disaster, drawing conclusions with insufficient facts, which turned out to be completely wrong. Real engineers do not jump to conclusions.

  2. Presumably, a column first failed in that area where the structure began to fall. When one column fails, it will add stress to adjacent columns as the floor slabs are pulled away, causing them to fail also. This is called “progressive collapse.” Whether the first column failed because the footing sank due to ground conditions, or whether it just broke, is not clear. That will be something NIST will try to determine.
