No need. Three-phase delta gives you efficient power transmission with only three wires. More phases would just use more wire with no real benefit.

No. A single phase genrator transmits all of its power over two wires. If you have three such generators offset by 120° you can generate three times the powr and transmit it over only three wires instead of six.

The distribution network is usually 3-phase Y. That requires four lines. The three phases are mounted at the top of a power pole and the neutral is mounted lower, typically just below the bottom of the transformers. The 3-wire service runs from the transformer to the customer.

You change 3-phase supply to 1-phase simply by ignoring two of the phases.
