  3. Nick Peters — Scotland has done very well in 300 years of union with England, but its population is only a tenth that of England. As an independent country, it would be about as important as Slovakia, a country of similar size. It’s a mystery to me why so many Scots would think a breakup ofGreat Britain would be a good thing. Perhaps its because the best Scots long ago left for North America. In the US and Canada they do not lobby for independence, as some of he French do. They contribute to society while maintaining their Scottish identy, without whinging about their lack of control over their destiny. In North America we are Canadians or Americans first, before any other identity we adhere to. In Great Britain, people seem to be Scots first, or Welsh or English, before citizens of the UK. That phenomenon also exists throughout Europe. I call it the European disease.

  5. Johnny Bravo — For one thing, the Spanish constitution prohibits searation of regions from Spain. The constitution was approved by a substantial margin in every region of Spain. In order for Catalonia to secede legally, there would need to be a nationwide vote to amend the constitution.
