The problem I have with this is that the difference in fuel economy between the highway gears (4th, 5th, 6th in my truck) is a second-order effect. The first-order effect is speed. If you want to improve your mileage, the best thing you can do is slow down (except for driving downhill, which is cheating). This is not hypothetical, but is my actual xperience. My truck tracks fuel economy. I generally keep the meter set for the last 50 miles. The best I ever saw was about 37 mpg obtained on country roads driving entirely in 3rd and 4th. That was my record until I came down the west slope of the Rockies and got about 42. My long-term average for trips with lots of normal highway driving is 28. I always want good mileage, but when I shift up I am thinking about engine rpm and the torque curve, not fuel efficiency. I don’t want the engine to be struggling at too low an rpm.
