  1. It’s a given that you balance each rod and piston with counterweight on the crankshaft. If you didn’t do that, and relied only on the pistons moving opposite to each other to balance, then most, or at least a large part, of the mass would be in the reciprocating parts. A heavy, balanced crankshaft is stronger and gives smoother operation.
