A galvanometer measures the field produced by an electric current. An electroscope merely shows the presence of electric charge.

Veritasium is flim-flamming us. I lost interest in that site after watching his visit to NIST. (formerly the National Bureau of Standards).

CO2 in nonpolar, because it is linear O-C-O. The polarity of the two bonds cancel out, because of the symmetry.

He certainly should have used distilled water just as a matter of careful experimental procedure.

“Veritasium” is derived from the Latin for “truth.” I have observed that people who claim to have “the truth” often don’t.

According to his own biographic information, he has an engineering degree from a Canadian university and a PhD from the Physics School of The University of Sydney, in Australia. Oddly, his PhD seems to be in physics education rather than physics per se. His thesis title is: Designing Effective Multimedia for Physics Education. By his own account, his true interest was filmmaking.

His lab technique is a little sloppy.

Polymerized ethelene, actually, but he was just speaking loosely.

Do you mean deionized?

The electric field varies by the inverse square of distance.
