The first electric cars were built long before the invention of the transistor and lithium batteries. They were not competitive at the time in economics or performance, and could not have become so in a reasonable time. Gasoline was plentiful and advances in internal combustion engines relatively easy to come by. Today, the technology and the economics are more favorable to electric vehicles, but not to such an extent that gasoline and diesel engines are suddenly obsolete.

The “Nikola Tesla Fan Club” is more of a cult. Tesla was a bright guy, without a doubt, but there were many others who made significant contributions to electric power technology but who are largely unknown.

Right, and it is spread out rather thinly. If it were not, it would do a lot of damage. In fact, it does do damage if people do not protect themselves when it is strongest.

Lightning is uncontrolled and can do a lot of damage. We have better ways of distributing electric power.

right

Yes, the main one being that radio is much better at transmitting information than transmitting energy.

Is this a parody of a Tesla cultist?

Tyson understands lasers. We use them in many useful ways, including transmitting energy. That would be a crazy expensive way to transmit electric power to your home.

Tyson’s role is as an educator. That is an honorable role. Isaac Asimov was another scientist who chose to become an educator. People who talk and write about science should be educated in science. That these people obtained their PhD then turned to education should not be held against them. Relatively few physicists make great advances in their field.

It’s a cult.
